Tuesday, October 2, 2012 - SENIOR Officials from 13 nations in the East Asian region met yesterday at The Empire Hotel and Country Club to set the agenda for the 5th East-Asia Ministerial Forum on Families (EAMFF) which begins today.

Chairing the forum yesterday was Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS), Hj Mohd Rozan Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Yunos.

In his remarks, Hj Mohd Rozan said the forum focussed on managing work-family balance, in line with the theme of 5th EAMFF Meeting: "Ensuring Work Family Balance"

"The issue of work-family balance is a global challenge by the family institution," said Hj Mohd Rozan in his address to senior official delegates yesterday. One issue he raised was the number of working mothers in both the public and private sectors had increased, "due to the rapid socio-economic development".

"Career mothers' commitments and contributions in the socio-economic development have undeniably changed their roles (as) full-time mothers and housewives," he said. "For this matter, not all parents can spend most of their time with their families, such as in taking care of their children."

He said that in handling the issue, the forum is expected to discuss as well as to share the experiences of participating East Asian countries on managing the issue of work-family balance.

Hj Mohd Rozan also expressed hope that the forum will achieve their objectives and strengthen the networking and collaboration in making the East Asian region "A place for stable development of families".

Apart from preparing the agenda for today's meeting, the forum also discussed the draft of the 'Brunei Darussalam Statement" as well as some discussions regarding the next 6th EAMFF meeting.

The 5th East Asian Ministerial Forum on Families will gather ministers or representatives from the Association of South-East Asian Nations, Timor Leste, South Korea, Australia and China.

Brunei, as the host country, is expected to be represented at this year's forum by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah.

About 100 delegates are expected to attend the biannual forum, which first began in Hanoi, Vietnam, 2004.

According to a statement by the MCYS, the meeting will touch on issues that will affect the balance between work and family, which can lead to social, psychological and somatic issues as well as reducing productivity in the workplace.

"The family is the basic unit of society, and has an important role and a source of stability and holistic development of a country," it said.
