Brunei-USA Military Drill Concludes

Brunei Darussalam, 14th November 2014 - SOME 109 Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF), 100 of them from the Land Forces, participated in a military assault exercise in an urban warfare scenario, with the United State Marine Corps at the Penanjong Garrison.
In an interview with Bulletin, Commander of the RBAF, Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Major General Dato Paduka Seri Mohd Tawih bin Abdullah and US Marine Corps, Captain Daniel Wendolowski expressed their satisfaction at the conclusion of the exercise yesterday.
The RBAF Commander told the Bulletin that the exercise would greatly benefit the RBAF. The Captain Daniel of the US Marine Corps said the exercise was crucial and both sides learnt a lot.
The exercise held during the Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) 2014, was conducted between the First Battalion of Royal Brunei Land Force (RBLF) and the Second Battalion of the United States Marines Corps (USMC).
CARAT Exercise marked its 20th annual edition with Brunei this year.
The RBAF Commander witnessed the final day of the exercise.The exercise was based on Military Operation in Urban Terrain (MOUT) which included a two-day symposium, a five-day practical exercise and a day of basic jungle operation. All activities were conducted at Penanjong Garrison.
The symposium was held at the Evolution Centre while the practical exercise was conducted at the FIBUA Complex of the Training Institute (TI) RBAF.
The five-day exercise that began on November 10 aimed to maintain relationship between the two armed forces in order to foster diplomatic ties and enhance mutual understanding.
Two personnel from Royal Brunei Navy (RBN), five personnel from TI RBAF and two personnel from Special Force Regiment (SFR) also participated in the drill.
Personnels from USMC and the First Battalion of RBLF were accommodated at Transit Camp, Penanjong Garrison.
The RBAF Commander said, “Alhamdulillah, I am happy with the exercise, even though it was at lower level – section and platoon level. The exercise was a significant benefit to the RBAF, especially for our soldiers to work together with a battle-hardened foreign military.”
“It was an opportunity to enhance the capability of our people”, the Commander said.
“And we were able to learn from the US marines, who have had real combat experience,” he added.
The commander said even though the exercise looked simple, it was sensible and such practical exercises could help save life during real combat.
US Marines Captain Daniel said the exercise had been great and that marines and soldiers worked very well together.
“A lot of my guys are very young and for them working with a partner nation, overcoming language barrier and learning different techniques and procedures, were such an invaluable experience”.
“We often fight in other countries, and these guys (Brunei soldiers) soon may become our official allies. I think this exercise was important and beneficial to us too,” said Daniel.
